Artist Teacher Researcher

A collaborative practice of inquiry, education, and making.

Artist and educator Theresa Clowes translates environmental data into abstract landscapes and public installations, inviting viewers to forge a deeper connection with our natural world. For over three decades, her work has explored the complex predicament of global warming and our ecological impact. Rather than dwelling on ominous dangers, Clowes emphasizes the joy of possibility and the prospect of ecological equilibrium.

Clowes uses material and concept to create a visual language that everyone can speak. By layering ideas of connection, balance, and harmony, her work illustrates the vital relationship between humanity, nature, and architecture. Her recent projects focus on 'symbiotic relationships,' studying the close, everyday exchanges between humans and the environment, reminding us that our impact on the environment can be one of reciprocity and mutual care.

With a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, her commitment to art is mirrored in her long-standing career as an educator. She has served as a Full Professor at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design for the past 15 years, and prior to that, for 12 years in K-12 art education. Clowes believes that being an artist and a teacher both stem from the heart and soul. Clowes is represented by Walker Fine Art Gallery in Denver, CO, and her public installations can be experienced throughout Denver and the surrounding Colorado area.
